What if my partner doesn't want to come to counselling?

This happens quite often. We understand that making the decision to come to counselling is difficult and stressful, and if the two of you are already not seeing eye to eye, then agreeing on counselling can also be difficult.

There can be a lot of reasons why someone doesn't want to. Maybe they are worried about cost or time. Maybe they’ve heard bad things about couple counselling, or maybe they’ve already had some therapy in the past and it wasn’t good. Maybe they don’t think they’ll be good at being in counselling. Maybe for some reason they expect the counsellor to take your side. Maybe deep down they worry that the problem is really them.

Or they may be thinking, if you keep picking at it, it won’t get better. Their stance may be that constantly focusing on what’s not right, is draining the hope and energy from the relationship. Maybe they are thinking, let’s just be nice and enjoy each other. That would be understandable. So maybe ask them about their reasons, and whatever they say, accept it. Don't try to make a counter-argument.

And you could come for one session of relationship counselling with us on your own. Don’t try to get them to come. Tell them you’re planning to do this, and they may decide to come along. That would be perfect! But if they don’t, we can try to understand what might be going on.
